A Climbing Instructors Course for those wishing to use a Climbing tower or wall will be held on March 21-22 at Alpine Scout Camp in Alpine, NJ. It is open to all Scouts, Venturers, and Scouters age 16 and up.

The course goal is to provide training to participants to ensure that they can safely and effectively assist or manage a climbing program for your camp, district or unit.  This course will provide hands on training in climbing and rappelling on a tower or wall. We will not be covering climbing at a natural rock face. After successful completion, participants could receive a certificate of training as a BSA Climbing Instructor or Instructor in Training.

A Level 2 Instructor must be at least 21 years of age and is allowed to direct a climbing/rappelling program.

A Level 1 Instructor must be at least 18 years of age and can assist in running a climbing/rappelling program.

An Instructor in Training must be at least 16 years of age and can assist in running a climbing rappelling program.

This course is intended for any interested person who meets the entry requirements:

Great attitude
Willingness to work with scouts and scouters
At least 16 years of age.
Prerequisite knowledge of Climbing basics is helpful but not required.

The course will begin at 8:00am on Saturday, March 21 at Reeves Lodge at Camp Alpine, Alpine NJ.

Hands-on learning at the indoor wall as well as the outdoor tower will take place all day Saturday. Overnight accommodations are available at Reeves Lodge also. Sunday morning after breakfast, we will travel to Camp Pouch on Staten Island and use their Climbing Wall. The course will conclude at 12:00 noon.

The fee of $70 covers the cost of the course, overnight accommodations as well as 3 meals on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday.

Early arrival and housing on Friday night can be made through the registration for an additional $5.

We will supply all equipment. You may bring your own harness, helmet and climbing shoes but they are not required.

It is recommended, but not required, that you have a basic understanding of the concepts of climbing such as belaying, knots and equipment in order to enroll in this course.

Upon successful completion of this course, you might receive a certificate as an “Instructor in Training”. This is a 1-year certificate for those 16 or older who meet all competencies, can apply them to routine, familiar program delivery situations with supervision and support.

Or, you might receive a certificate as a “Level 1 Climbing Instructor”. This is a 1-year certificate for those 18 or older who meet all competencies, can apply them to routine, familiar program delivery situations with supervision and support.

Or, you may receive a certificate as a “Level 2 Climbing Instructor”. This is a 3-year certificate for those 21 or older who fully meet all competencies, can apply them to solving most non-routine situations, and can provide leadership to other staff. You are then able to act as a “Qualified Instructor” at a unit, district, or council climbing/rappelling activity.

Please bring the following items with you to the course:

A completed BSA Annual Health and Medical Record
A copy of your current Climb On Safely card (Take the course on the My.Scouting site if you do not have a current card.)
